Shafer, Roslyn Carol 58, died January 18th in Rochester of
leukemia. Born in Newburgh in 1954, the second youngest child of Celia
and Philip Shafer, Roz was an amazing individual who had an impact on
every person that she met. Trained as an elementary school teacher – she
received a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from SUC Oneonta - she
worked for many years in Workforce Development at IBM in East Fishkill,
before breaking out on her own, purchasing a franchise from an
innovative company that combined technology and early learning into
programs aimed at teaching young children. Computer Explorers gave her
the opportunity to finally work with children, and sharing in and
inspiring their learning journey was both satisfying and greatly
exhilarating for her. In 2003, after over 10-yrs with the company, she
sold her franchise and her home and fulfilled yet another dream; she
returned to Oneonta, New York, a place she had always loved, and bought
a beautiful 1860 brick home on the banks of the Susquehanna River.
Having proven herself a valuable, creative voice in the field of early
learning via technology, she continued to work for the company, for
years writing the curriculum that would inspire yet another generation
of young computer explorers. Roz inspired her friends and family, as
well; her brother, Thomas Shafer, sister, Irene Shafer, cousins Jaime,
Juliet, Erik, Rhian, Shari, Howie, and all their children. There was no
one she met that she did not immediately connect with, as evidenced by
her numerous friends and colleagues, from varied groups, spread all
across the country. Roz was passionate about many things, from animals,
art, photography, and music, to politics and the environment. She loved
to travel and made trips to Italy, Belize, Mexico, Hawaii, and Ireland.
She loved to cook and entertain. She loved her house and her beautiful
garden. She loved to create art. But most of all, she loved her friends
and her family. Roz is survived by her brother Tom, of Middletown, NY,
her sister, Irene, of Fishkill, NY, cousins Erik Stams and his wife,
Rhian, and their two children, Gwen and Nia, Jaime Stams and his wife,
Juliet, and their two children, Jaxon and Jared, Shari Bucholz and her
husband, and their children, Nicole and Brett. A memorial gathering will
be held at Hesse Galleries at 350 Main Street in Otego, NY on February
9th, from 1 pm into the evening. In lieu of flowers, the family is
suggesting donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
