Maharay, William E. 81, of Myrtle Beach died on September 12, 2012 at Grand Strand General Hospital, of complications resulting from surgery. He was a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Bill, as all knew him, was born in Newburgh, NY on August 19, 1931. After graduating from Newburgh Free Academy in 1951, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Korea. Bill came home a decorated veteran, and immediately returned to work for "Doc" Baxter at Baxter's Pharmacy where he worked while attending NFA. Some of his friends may also remember William Maharay Used Cars which he operated with his father at Maharay's Garage on North Plank Road. In later years Bill worked as a route supervisor for A&N Vending in Beacon, and prior to retiring to Myrtle Beach to relax and be closer to his sister, Ethel and brother, Walt, he owned and operated the popular Golden Rail Tavern on Old North Plank Road. Bill is survived by his daughter, Susan Altopiedi of Tampa; two granddaughters, Kimberly Dawn Lindsey and Rebecca Sarah Johnson; four great-grandchildren: Amber Taylor Johnson, Ryan Anthony Johnson, Emilee Sierra Johnson and Daniel Joseph Lindsey; his sister, Ethel Nuccitelli of Myrtle Beach; his brother, Walter Maharay of North Myrtle Beach, and numerous cousins in the Newburgh area. Bill will always be remembered for his caring personality, gracious smile and quick wit. His sister, Ethel, often said that once he greeted you, you were never again a stranger, but forever his friend. His spirit and indomitable nature can be captured in this anonymous quote, "When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile." To respect Bill's last wishes, no services are currently planned.
