Barone, Concezo Peter passed away on July 26, 2010 of respiratory
failure, after a brief illness. "Pete" was born in Newburgh, NY on
December 28, 1925 and has resided in the Town of Poughkeepsie since 1953
with his beloved wife of 62 years, Kathleen (DiCesare). Pete and Kay
were high school sweethearts and married after serving his country in
the U.S. Air Force at the end of World War II. Pete was the son of
Nicholas and Anna Barone. In addition to his wife, Kay, Pete leaves
surviving his son, Carl P. Barone and daughter-in-law, Carol, and
daughter, Karen M. Stude; grandchildren: Kathi, Justin and Lauren Studer
and Connor and Caylea Barone. Pete and Kay celebrated their 62nd wedding
anniversary on July 25. Pete's eyes lit up when in the presence of his
grandchildren who adored him and kept him young at heart to the very
end. Pete's two sisters, Gloria DeSanctis and Marie Barone, also
survived in Newburgh. Pete was a loyal employee of IBM for 40 years,
walking to work in the early years from his home in the Town of
Poughkeepsie. Even though his formal education ended when he graduated
from high school, Pete was an instructor in the Tool & Dye School
for many years, earning the respect of his students and coworkers. He
rose to the rank of manager at IBM. Pete was a member of the Italian
Center for decades and served this organization loyally for which he was
honored by being named "Member of the Year." Pete had a special place in
his heart for the "underdog" and his mantra included the advice to be
humble in your success. He often gave the hard worker a "tip" for their
extra effort in delivering something to the house or when out doing
errands, but didn't condone government handouts or free spending. To the
end, Pete could be seen taking care of his yard, riding his lawn tractor
and keeping up his landscaping. He took special pride in the "lake
house" he built himself on the shores of Lake Champlain on Willsboro
Point. He enjoyed gathering there with family whenever possible. In his
younger days, Pete had the best holiday light display in the town! Pete
will be missed by all who loved him and benefited from his sage advice.

Canade, Mary Lou born in Newburgh, on June 26, 1926, passed away on
Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at Putnam Ridge Nursing Home, Brewster, NY. She
was 84. The beloved daughter of Vincent and Josephine Canade, Mary was
well known for being a loving caretaker to those who were ill or in
need, all of her life. One of her great loves was music and she could
often be heard playing the piano. She studied the piano for years and
probably could have become a concert pianist. As Edna St. Vincent Milay
said, "Following care along the dusty road, have I looked back at
loveliness and sighed; Yet at my hand an unrelenting hand tugged ever,
and I passed. All my life long, over my shoulder I have looked at peace;
And now I fain would lie in this long grass and close my eyes." First
when her father became, ill, she cared for him; later her mother when
she became ill; and lastly for her late sister, Lucretia. She always put
the needs of others before her own desires. A graduate of Newburgh Free
Academy, she spent many happy years working at Stewart Air Base and
later at West Point, where she was involved in running the housing
department. She loved meeting new people and quickly made newcomers feel
at home. In her later years, she particularly enjoyed musical
productions and entertainment. While she never married, she was a second
mother to her sister's children. We thank her for all of her kindness
and years of unselfish care she provided to her family, whenever they
were in need. Mary is survived by her sister, Anita Cosman; nieces:
Judith Ann Challis, Joyce Cosman Gilcash, Karen Pill and Debra Lawrence;
as well as many cousins. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on
Friday, August 27, at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave. Newburgh. A
Funeral Service will be private. Burial will take place in Cedar Hill
Cemetery, Newburgh.

King,
Marion
Kirkpatrick, Robert J. Jr. passed away on April 16, 2015, at the age of
87. He was at home with his family. Bob was born May 4, 1927 and raised
in Newburgh and would often speak of the history associated with the
town that he held dear, and he was proud to be a lifelong resident. Bob
was a self-made man from early in his life, joining the US Navy to be in
World War II at the age of 17. Bob spent many days in the Pacific on the
USS Shangri-La and would incorporate stories of his time on the ship
into many of his conversations, including how he and Admiral McCain
became confidants during their time at sea together. He spoke with pride
about having the responsibility of operating all of the ship's boilers
to power the vessel through the Panama Canal at the age of 18 and about
gaining the respect of those with whom he served. Bob married Linda Jean
Case in 1965 and with her devoted support they created an appraisal
company together and worked side by side for many years. Linda's
encouragement led Bob to become active in town politics and he became
councilman in the Town of Newburgh in 1972. In 1984, Bob was elected to
the position of Supervisor of the Town of Newburgh. With a political
career of nearly two decades, he was instrumental in getting sewer
service in the Town of Newburgh, obtaining a post office for the town,
as well as numerous other projects for improvement for the town. He was
also a firm supporter of the town police department. He coined the
phrase "Crossroads of the Northeast," promoting the fact that the town's
location was ideal for, in his own words, "small and medium-sized
businesses which can bring new jobs and tax rateables to the township"
while still maintaining the delicate environmental balance of the town
and preserving the rural and affordable lifestyle it offered. Bob was an
avid fisherman, trout fishing in the Esopus Creek on the banks of the
camp where he spent weekends with his family in Mount Tremper, and
fishing and ice fishing in Orange Lake and Chadwick Lake in his
hometown. After retirement, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of flying,
inspired by the planes landing and taking off from the aircraft carrier
upon which he was stationed during the war, by obtaining his pilot's
license. He took pride in taking people on trips in his Piper Warrior
airplane. He was a storyteller and could talk to everyone he met about a
variety of topics and he took delight out of making people laugh with
him. Bob is survived by his wife of fifty years Linda; his daughter,
Lynne Lewis and her husband, Bobby of Palm Bay, Florida; his son, Robert
J. Kirkpatrick, III and his wife, Toni, and his daughter, KC Kirkpatrick
and her wife, Christy. In addition, he is survived by his grandsons:
Cameron Kirkpatrick and Robert J. Kirkpatrick, IV. Bob was predeceased
by his father, Robert J. Kirkpatrick, Sr., and his aunt and uncle,
Gertrude and Irving Avery. Visitation for family and friends will take
place Sunday, April 19th from 2 to 6 p.m. at White & Venuto Funeral
Home, 188 North Plank Rd., Newburgh. Funeral service will be held 11
a.m. Monday, April 20th at the funeral home. Burial to follow at New
Hurley Cemetery in Wallkill. A reception to follow to celebrate the life
of a larger than life man. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to
Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh
NY 12550 in appreciation of their tireless work.

Reiss, Dr.
William J. 85, died on Nov. 12, 2011. He is survived by his beloved wife
of almost 60 years, Ruth; his son, Michael; his daughter, Leslie
Fuentes; and son-in-law, Joseph J. Fuentes; and granddaughters, Adina
Eve and Jocelyn Jane; and brother-in-law, Arthur Miller of Newburgh,
N.Y. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Celia Reiss; and
his sister, Renee of Newburgh, N.Y. Dr. Reiss was born in New York City
on July 14, 1926. His parents met after each had emigrated from Eastern
Europe to the United States; both were in their late teens and found
jobs in New York City, working in a difficult pre-depression
environment. After they married and while Dr. Reiss was about two years
old, his parents moved to Newburgh, N.Y., in search for better jobs and
to escape the sweatshops of New York. Like so many others, they
struggled under the burden of the Great Depression. During middle and
late childhood Dr. Reiss worked after school hours to help support the
family. During those harsh years he decided that he would aim towards a
professional career knowing that his parents had no means to pay for
college. All through junior high and high school, he continued part time
work for local merchants. He graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in
1944 and a few days thereafter enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served
as a Pharmacist's Mate Second Class until 1946 at the end of World War
II. He was proud of his naval service and this pride was reflected in
his docent activity on the USS Wisconsin berthed in Norfolk. Following
his service in the Navy, he attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh,
Pa., where he met Ruth who was a student in the School of Music at
Duquesne. They married in December 1951. After graduating from Duquesne
in 1950, Dr. Reiss entered the Graduate School at Adelphi University in
Garden City, N.Y., where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in
clinical psychology, graduating Adelphi in 1954. At Adelphi he was
awarded a graduate assistantship and an Ernest Bivin Foundation
Scholarship. Upon graduating from Adelphi University he served a
clinical internship in psychology at the University Of Nebraska School
Of Medicine's Psychiatric Institute and thereafter was appointed to the
staff of the Norfolk (Nebraska) State Hospital. In November 1956 he and
Ruth moved to Hampton, Va., where he joined the Veterans Administration
Hospital. In 1980 he entered full-time practice with Chessan and
Associates in Newport News, Va. Dr. Reiss served on the professional
staffs of Sentara Hospital, Hampton General Hospital, Mary Immaculate
Hospital and Peninsula Psychiatric Hospital. He held faculty
appointments in the off-campus divisions of the University of Virginia,
the College of William and Mary and the George Washington University. He
also served on the editorial board of the Journal of Child Clinical
Psychology and held memberships in the American Psychological
Association, The Virginia Academy of Science, the Virginia Psychological
Association and The American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Together with Ruth he shared a passion for the preservation of the
natural environment, and a love for life in the outdoors. He was loyal
supporter of the Nature Fund the Wilderness Society. Flying was also one
of his passions; he held a private pilots license. Dr. Reiss had a deep
concern for the land of Israel and continued to support the struggle
against international bigotry and terrorism. Dr. Reiss was a wonderful
husband and father and adored his two granddaughters. He was deeply
loved by his family and will be missed. A funeral service will be held
today, Monday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m. at Rodef Sholom Temple, officiated by
Rabbi Gilah Dror. Burial will follow in the Jewish Cemetery of the

Steup,
Frederick Chester II - The Reverend Frederick Chester Steup, II, a
deacon at St. Patrick's Church and Our Lady of the Lake, and a resident
of the Town of Newburgh passed away on July 20, 2012 at St. Luke's
Hospital after a long illness. He was 85 years old. Born November 26,
1926 in Baldwin, Long Island, he was the son of the late Frederick C.
Steup and the late Gertrude Brandhuber Steup. Working as a TV repairman,
a music store sales clerk, and a motion picture projectionist in
Newburgh during his early years, he later became an administrator for
the NYS Dept. of Transportation, a position he held for many years until
his retirement. He was ordained to the deaconate of the Roman Catholic
Church in 1978 and was a member of the first upstate graduating class
following the Pope's encyclical creating the modern day deaconate. He
had a deep love of learning and a hearty sense of humor, his greatest
devotion being to his family and to the Church. Beneath a sometimes
gruff exterior, he had compassion for the sick and elderly,
encouragement for anyone seeking knowledge, and a fondness for cats. He
could design and build almost anything and could understand the
mechanical operation of any piece of equipment from a public address
system to a nuclear submarine. His thirst for knowledge led him from
piloting aircraft to photography, ham radio, dancing, amateur theatre,
and sailing. He loved reading, seashore vacations, classical music, the
ballet and easy-listening hits from the 30's and 40's. He was proud of
his sons and all of his grandchildren, often joking that with three sons
and five grandsons, the family could only acquire females through
marriage. He was witty, a frequent punster, yet a stickler for details
and proper procedures. He strove for excellence in all things, and
usually achieved it. A member of Mensa, he was also a 4th degree Knight
of Columbus, a member of the former Newburgh Civic Theatre, and Chaplin
for Goodwill Fire Department in the Town of Newburgh. In earlier times,
he was the Chief of Police for the Town of Newburgh's Auxilary Police
Department and was a volunteer with the Orange County Department of
Civil Defense, later becoming a radiological officer with the state of
New York's Department of Civil Defense. He was also a volunteer at Elant
Nursing Home at Meadow Hill in Newburgh, where he conducted a Sunday
communion service for over 40 years. At age 19, he married the love of
his life, Maureen A. Stang at St. Patrick's Church. The two celebrated
64 years of marriage together. She survives him at home. He enlisted in
the U.S. Army and served during World War II in several stateside
locations. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons:
Frederick C. Steup, III and his wife, Debra, of Cairo, NY; Michael E.
Steup and his wife, Leslie, of Rock Tavern, NY; and John H. Steup and
his wife, Anne, of Portland, Oregon. He is also survived by his five
grandsons: Otto Gray, Devon Steup, Frederick C. Steup, IV, Thomas
Gervat, and Jonrhien Steup. In addition, he is survived by two
step-grandchildren: Devin Gittler and his wife, Renata, of Rock Hill and
Tiffany Steinhilber of Goldsboro, NC. Survivors also include his two
step-granddaughters, Bailey Steinhilber of Pine Bush and Brandi
Steinhilber of Goldsboro, NC, and dear friends, Arlene and John Staples
of Vermont. Visitation will be Monday, July 23, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9
p.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 55 Grand St., Newburgh, where he will lie
in state. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, July 24, at
10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church. Fr. Fernando Hernandez will be the
celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to St. Patrick's Soup Kitchen, 55 Grand Street,

Dorothy Presutti Born Feb. 24, 1926 Died
Sept. 29, 1990
Valenti,
Patsy Delia born in Newburgh to Lucia Valicenti Valenti and Adolfo
Valenti, she was predeceased by three sisters; Helen Valenti, Philomena
Sassone and Dorothy Presutti. She passed peacefully after suffering for
about a year from cancer and related heart and kidney complications. At
the time of her death, she was in the company of her husband, Massimo
Delia; two sons, Ralph and James Delia, daughter-in-law, Anna Arevalo
Delia, and Danny Mangano. She was also the loving grandmother of James
Delia Jr. Surviving her, as noted, is Danny Mangano whom Patsy and
Massimo lovingly raised from infancy when Danny's mother unexpectedly
passed away at a young age in their Hialeah neighborhood. The Mangano
family will miss her too, as will all of us. She graduated from Newburgh
Free Academy, worked as a cosmetologist and silk screener, and married
Massimo Delia on June 6, 1954 in Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh. In
1956, she moved to Hialeah, FL, where her husband, "Doots" was employed
as an upholsterer for Pan Am Airlines. Patsy Ruth, affectionately known
as "Aunt Pat" by friends, neighbors and relatives, was a model for that
generation of totally selfless Italian matriarchs. When she wasn't
serving family and neighbors with her culinary specialities, she was
entertaining them with her charm. From her childhood, she was the life
of the party who could fill a room with laughter and love at the same
time. She was the epitome of the "family first" adage, who never forgot
a birthday and would lovingly feed everyone around - holiday or not. She
was the neighborhood Mom, respected and loved by all, who oftentimes
gave to others more than she could afford. Even in her final weeks, her
focus was on others. In addition, Aunt Pat, whether with food or fabric,
was creative and giving. Her needlework, stained glass, cake decorating,
and ceramics served as expressions of her generosity, her zest for life,
and her love for those she touched. She also leaves behind a number of
Valicenti, Kuprych, Sassone and Presutti nephews, nieces and cousins,
and with her passing she takes an entire generation with her. To
celebrate her life, and as a tribute to how much she will be missed, a
Mass in her memory will be offered on Wednesday evening, March 9, at 7
p.m., at Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh.

Vecchio, Jean Irene 87, died peacefully late Saturday evening, April 11,
2015, in the Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center. Vermont. She
was born on Oct. 16, 1927, in Newburgh, N.Y., the only child of Thomas
and Irene (Raven) Vecchio. After high school and business school, Jean
first followed in her father's footsteps working at the United States
Military Academy at West Point. She then spent a short time in civil

worked at IBM's Federal Systems Division in Washington and Omaha before
moving and making her home in Essex, where she rose to Manager before
retiring in 1987. In retirement, Jean traveled, read voraciously, and
doted on a nationwide network of friends. With her dear friends from The
Pines she took trips, organized gatherings, played cards, shared
recipes, and lent a hand or a word of encouragement wherever she could.
Jean's love of food was well known to everyone who knew her. It was said
she remembered her vacations not by the sights but by the restaurants,
and could recall what she had to eat anywhere she'd visited. Jean loved
to cook for her friends and shared her creations around The Pines and

Tom wish to express their thanks and appreciation to the staff at
Burlington Health and Rehab and to everyone who kept in touch with Jean
or visited during her stay there. At Jean's request, there will be no
visiting hours or funeral services. Online condolences may be made to www.minorfh.com.
Vento,
Velma Jane Grisham...... Born June 15, 1926 Died April 14, 1999 http://ventomirto.weebly.com/velma-vento.htmltml
Beloved mother of seven - Still loved in heaven Velma was the second
child of Jane Vento and the first child of Peter Vento. Velma was an
adorable baby and the little darling of the Vento/Mirto clan. Velma’s
mother, Jane Yeaple-Vento, was of Dutch heritage. Velma’s father, Peter,
was of Italian heritage. Velma grew up very poor. They lived in an
apartment above a bar in old Newburgh. Velma who blossomed as a young
woman was very beautiful. She hated having to cross paths with the
drunks hanging out in front of her doorway gawking at her as she climbed
the stairs to their second floor apartment. Their home had an iron stove
which, not only was used for cooking, but heated their hot water. It
would have to be stoked with wood to heat the house and generate hot
water. Showers weren’t bearable until the water was heated. They also
heated water for washing clothes. The house was always cold in the
mornings until the stove was stoked. Velma’s mother, Jane, was a very
tidy housekeeper and Velma remembered her mother on her hands and knees
scrubbing the floors while singing gospel hymns. Jane ironed clothes
with an old cast iron, set on the stove long enough to get hot. One time
while ironing, Jane got mad at Pete and threw the iron at him, missing,
but the iron stuck right into the wall. Pete often was in the dog house
with Jane when he’d flirt with other women. They were so poor that Velma
and Jane had to wash out old rags for their womanly cycles. Velma walked
miles to school, in all kinds of weather, and often times she’d take a
shortcut through the park which was frightening encountering the tramps
that lived there. Velma’s brother, Don, got in some trouble as a teen
and caused his mother a lot of heart ache. He was a bit of a rebel.
Their father, Pete wasn’t much of a disciplinarian to Don. Maybe he
didn’t feel right disciplining the son that was not his by birth. Maybe
Jane stepped in too many times. You see Jane was a victim of incest by
her Uncle and it resulted in a pregnancy. She gave birth to Don and kept
the child, which was a brave thing to do in those days. A single mother
was not something too many people looked kindly on. Jane was emotionally
scarred by her childhood and trusted few men. But somehow Pete swept her
off of her feet and married her. Read about when Velma meets Bill......http://ventomirto.weebly.com/velma--bill.html

Posted by Bob Wilson 52
A lifelong resident of Newburgh and Balmville, Barbara (or, "Bunny", as
she was known to family, friends and acquaintances for most of her life)
was born to Robert J. Wilson (NFA Class of 1921) and the former Margaret
E. Jackson of Courtney Avenue in August 1926 at St. Luke's Hospital.
During her school years, she lived in the Colonial Terraces with her
family and her younger brother Bobby (NJHS Class of 1949), except for
three years on Gedney Way in the early 1940's. During her high school
days and just after, she worked at Schoonmaker's part time, at the PX at
Stewart Field, and later at the Lily of France Company on the Cochecton
Turnpike. She attended New Paltz State Teacher's College for one year,
in the school year 1944-1945. She met her husband-to-be, Jack Flemming
in 1947, and they were married in June, 1948 in the Rectory of St.
Mary's Church on South Street. The young couple resided in Syracuse
until Jack graduated from college in 1951, while Bunny worked for the
Dean of Men there until her first child, Jeffrey Stephen, was born in
May, 1951. Her husband Jack went to work for the Gordon Marvel
architectural firm following graduation, and the Flemmings lived briefly
in an apartment on Vanness Street behind Harold Galloway's Ford
Dealership. Their second son, Peter Wilson, was born in March 1953, and
they moved at about that time to the Carobene Court apartments. Jack
prospered with the Marvel firm, and soon struck off with fellow Marvel
architect George Silverman to form the Flemming and Silverman firm in
Newburgh. Jack soon built a new home for the growing family on Powelton
Circle in Balmville. In July of 1956, son Gregory John was born, and in
April, 1958, their fourth child, Lisa Ann, was born. For the remainder
of her life, Bunny lived in the Balmville house until her sudden death
in early 1989, just over a year after the death of her husband. She left
her four children, and is also survived today by seven grandchildren, in
Virginia, California and Florida... Bunny was a wonderful mother, and
was a generous, tireless and uncomplaining worker for Newburgh community
causes throughout her life after her children reached school age, most
notably as a volunteer receptionist at St. Luke's Hospital. Twenty years
after her death, she is still mourned by her family and her surviving
Newburgh friends.
