Corbo, Nicholas P. affectionately known as "Daddy" and "Poppy" to his children and grandchildren, and "Nicky" or "Nick" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 30, 2012. He was 66 years old. Nick passed away at his home in Cornwall, NY, surrounded by his devoted family, exactly three months to the day from when he received the diagnosis of terminal cancer. Not one of those days was spent in self-pity, because he said he had a good life. Instead, he spent his time praying for those who could not pray for themselves. Nick was born September 15, 1945 in Newburgh, NY to Nicholas and Catherine Corbo, both of whom preceded him in death. He considered himself a lifelong resident of Newburgh, where he graduated from NFA in 1964. He was proud to be a 12-year member of Local 137 Operating Engineers of Briarcliff Manor, NY, and a 25-year member of Local 417 Ironworkers Union of Newburgh, NY. He owned and operated Cor-steel Fabricators & Erectors, and Corbo's Welding before that. In addition to erecting buildings and bridges, Nick created many pieces of art, though he humbly referred to them as "Nicky-nacks". He loved welding and carving. He also loved spending time on his boat, The Piquad, though more time was spent working on it than sailing it. In fact, Nick loved anything he could fix or rebuild. Always devoted to giving back, he was highly involved in his community on Okaloosa Island in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. With a smile and a good deed for almost anyone he encountered, Nick had countless friends. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Corbo, and his four beloved children: Nicole Corbo, Jeannine Corbo, Wendy Doyle and her husband, Tom Doyle, and Ed Burke and his wife, Tara Burke. His three precious grandchildren: Tommy and Matty Doyle and Ashton Burke, also survive him, in addition to his aunts, Fortune Burkoski, Frances Carfora, Lee Fratto, Barbara Colello, and Carol DeCandia, as well as many cherished cousins. Nick measured his wealth by the love of his family and, therefore, considered himself excessively rich. He also considered himself a good son, a good husband, and a good father, but we all considered him extraordinary. At Nick's request, there will be no service or memorial; however, donations may be made in his name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital: 800-822-6344. Additionally, his eldest daughter, Nicole, will be gathering stories to create a book in his honor. If you would like to submit a story or send the family condolences, please do so by emailing nicky.p.stories@gmail.com

Peterkin, Thomas Douglas "Tom" 1964 graduate of NFA. Tom went into the Army after graduating and was killed in Tay Ninh, South Vietnam. He was a SP4. Tom was born 3/17/46 and killed 3/21/67 shortly after his 21st birthday. The above is a picture of Tom at NFA, SJHS.+ Gardnertown 3rd grade..He was one year ahead of me. Every year on Memorial day my wife and I visit the WALL. One of several guys we visit is Tom. We leave a small laminated note at the WALL every year. There was an old song that always reminded me of him. In the song 20 years ago is now 40 years ago but it still reminds me. I put this together. The one part always reminded me of Tom CLICK HERE !
Posted by Bill Way 8/11/04 Tom Peterkin was drafted the same time I was, December 1965, and died in April 1967 from enemy fire. I read of his death while I also was in Vietnam. Tom will never be forgotten while his brother vets still walk this earth.
Newburgh Youth Killed in Vietnam
Only four days after he reached his 21st birthday, Spec 4 Thomas Douglas Peterkin, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas S. Peterkin of 29 Park Ave., Town of Newburgh, lost his life in South Vietnam. According to a brief Army telegram, Peterkin was killed Tuesday at a base camp attacked by enemy mortar, grenade and small arms fire. He had been in Vietnam for only six months. It is believed that the soldier died in the Tay Ninh battle which resulted in what U.S. commander Gen. William C. Westmoreland called “one of the greatest victories of the war.” In the operation, the American soldiers chalked up an approximately 20-to-1 confirmed kill ratio over the enemy. An Associated Press report from Saigon stated that the fighting cost 31 American dead and 109 wounded, and the enemy forces suffered at least 596 dead. Tay Ninh is located about 70 miles northwest of Saigon. The handsome and athletic young man had been employed at the IBM branch at Fishkill before he entered the service. He had planned to go to college after his military service, his mother said. Peterkin, a 1964 graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, was born at St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh on St. Patrick’s Day in 1946. He played baseball in the Little Leage, Pony and Colts Leagues. He was a member of the northeastern U.S. championship team in the PONY League in 1961. He played shortstop for NFA. He also won a large number of trophies in bowling competitions. Late last year, he was credited in Vietnam with being a sharp-shooter with his M-79 grenade launcher. Spec. Peterkin used his weapon to bring a Viet Cong down from the treetops when his platoon ambushed two Viet Cong sampans in the Vietnamese jungle. The last letter Mr. and Mrs. Peterkin received from their son was dated Mar. 12. It read in part as follows: Dear Mom and Dad,I just got back to base camp today. Seeing as how I left for R and R (rest and recreation) on the 25 of Feb., it wasn’t a bad scene at all. Then when I got back to Saigon, I stayed there one week. So far nobody has said anything and I doubt if they will, but I really don’t care either way. I had a great time in Hawaii. I guess Dick (Richard Foster, his brother-in-law) is back home by now. When will he, Carol (his sister and Mrs. Foster) and Teri (their 16-month-old daughter) be leaving for Georgia? "I am supposed to be transferred to the 196th Brigade shortly. Quite a few of the guys have already left, and Butch Leoce (a close friend of his) will be leaving tomorrow or the next day. I kind of hope that I will go even though the 196 seems to see a lot of action. I think they are about due for a break and I could use one myself. I saw in the paper (THE EVENING NEWS) where Leslie Grant and Elaine Johnson are engaged. I also saw a few more that were either getting married or engaged that I knew. Looks like I’ll have to go to Georgia, there won’t be any girls left in Newburgh when I get back. This is going to have to be a short letter because I have a lot of mail to answer. I guess you can still address your letters the same (way) and I’ll let you know if my address is changed. Oh yeah. If I go to the 196 I will be at the same base camp as Danny Messina (whose home is next door to the Peterkins), Tay Ninh. How about that? Thomas Douglas Peterkin - Evening News, March 27, 1967 Body of Soldier Returned; Services Set Tuesday Born on St. Patrick Day 1946 and killed last Thursday four days after his 21st birthday in Vietnam, the late Spec. 4 Thomas D. Peterkin returned to Newburgh Easter Sunday morning. The former sharpshooter, who excelled with his M-79 grenade launcher as he did with a Little League, Pony and Colt League baseball bat, lost his life in the Tay Ninh battle which resulted in what U.S. commander Gen. William C. Westmoreland called “one of the greatest victories of the war. The unviewable remains, encased in a steel coffin and transported in a plain grey pine box similar to the one used at the funeral of Astronaut William White III, arrived in Beacon at 7:43 a.m. Sunday via express from New York City. The body was flown from Saigon to Dover, Del., where it was prepared for final burial. Accompanying the deceased on the rail trip from Dover was Spec. 4 Jose Bou of Puerto Rico. Funeral services for Spec. 4 Peterkin, son of Douglas and Gertrude Foy Peterkin of 29 Park Ave., Gardnertown, will be held at Perrott’s Funeral Home, 1 Grand Ave., Newburgh, Tuesday morning at 11. Besides his parents, survivors are two sisters, Carol Ann, wife of Richard Foster of the U.S.A.F. in Georgia, and Gail Peterkin at home; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Nellie A. Peterkin of Palm Beach, Fla.; and a niece, Teri Foster. Burial will be in the Gardnertown Cemetery by David J. Perrott & Son. Peterkin, a member of the 1962 Northeastern United States Colt League Champions, was born at St. Luke’s Hospital on March 17, 1946. He was a 1964 graduate of NFA and was employed at IBM prior to his entrance into service. In addition to his parents and sister, Mrs. Foster, Spec. Peterkin is also survived by a younger sister, Gail, 14. In lieu of flowers, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas S. Peterkin of 29 Park Ave., requested that contributions be made to the Newburgh PONY League in his memory. Contributions may be sent to Newburgh PONY League at Box 815, Newburgh, NY. Wesley F. Gill, executive director of the program, said that a memorial to Peterkin will be established at Tarr Oval.

Posted by Jeffrey Riewe John is my brother. We have the same father, Herman Riewe and different mother's. My father had mentioned back in my childhood that I had 2 other brothers from a different mother. I found John through a search and he came to Barstow, CA, stayed and visited with my wife and me. John and I got to know one another and quickly realized how much we had in common. I kept in contact with John after our initial visit. When I could not contact John by phone or e-mail, I started to find out something had happened and why we had lost contact. Finally I found this page and found the answer. In the description of family it says he has a brother Jeff in Arizona, That is probably me. Jeffrey Theodore Riewe, Barstow, California. If anyone knows the circumstances surrounding his death, information would be appreciated. We both had a love of animal's, both looked like our dad, stood like our dad, and it was nice to find that we in many ways were so much alike.
