Tidd, Viola (Vi) Meyers 80, passed away on Wednesday, March
14, 2012, surrounded by her children, Brian and Wendy at the age of 80.
Born August 6, 1931 in Port Jervis, New York, Vi was a graduate of
Newburgh Free Academy. Vi was one of 10 children and as a young woman
she worked as a pop-corn girl at the local cinema and then as a
telephone operator for AT&T. She met the love of her live, Arthur
(Mickey) Meyers at a local tavern called the Rhode-of-Arms. They married
on October 21, 1961 in Vails Gate, New York and held hands for the
entire 29 years of marriage until Mickey passed accidentally in July
1991. During the course of their marriage, she carried three children
with two surviving. Mickey was an engineer with I.B.M., which required
frequent moves. Vi established loving homes in New York, Vermont,
Virginia, and finally, Owego, New York where the family settled on the
home that they had built on 37 acres of paradise. Vi was continually
active in the community and with a large circle of friends and
relatives. Her red hair made her a standout in any crowd and her
laughter could change a room. After Mickey's retirement from I.B.M., Vi
chose to return to A.T.&.T. as a telephone operator. The fact that
she passed the computer based exam with scores higher than the much
younger applicants was a source of pride. Vi always had a quick wit and
sharp mind and, as one of her doctor's said the Sunday prior to her
passing, she still had all her marbles. Shortly after Mickey passed, Vi
moved to DeLand with her sister and best friend, Hazel (Tidd) Pagano.
There, they became extremely active in the Veterans' of Foreign Wars
Post 2380 where for many years she served breakfast, called B.I.N.G.O.,
attended many national conventions and held almost every office,
including President. ViandHazel (one word because some thought they were
interchangeable) won the Volunteer of the Year Award for Volusia County.
She was extremely proud of her volunteer service and her commitment to
Veterans' Rights. Left to celebrate her life and mourn her passing are
son Brian; adored granddaughter Jamie Ann; and daughter-in-law Holly
Meyers (Gaspard), all of Candor, New York; as well as daughter Wendy
Cullen (Meyers) and son-in-law Michael who has now lost his "Mom-Vi",
both of DeLand; special family member Valerie Case of Candor, New York;
siblings Auntie-Haze (Tidd) Pagano, Joan Tidd and Merton (Butch) Tidd,
all of Port Jervis, New York, Patti Cullen and John Beacham, of
Longwood, Florida; and nephews Michael (Terri) Pagano and Jeff
(Margaret) Pagano, both of New Windsor, New York. Bo Dog and Brady Dog
Cullen will also miss the ear rubs that Grandma Vi would provide. A
memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2011 at 10:30 a.m.
and VFW Post 2380 in DeLand, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family
requests donations to the Women's Auxiliary for Post 2380, DeLand,
Florida or the Wounded Warrior Project.
